Technical review and safety assessment including radiation exposure and risk calculations

Danish Decommissioning (DD) is responsible for receiving, treating and storing radioactive waste from Danish users of radioactive isotopes and from decommissioned research reactors. DD is planning the construction of new, upgraded storage facilities at Risø, Denmark. The upgraded facilities are needed in order to store radioactive waste in a safe and environmentally and technically sound wayuntil a permanent solution for disposal of the radioactive waste has been implemented. The upgraded storage facilities have to live up to a series of legal requirements from Danish and international authorities before construction of the facilities can be initiated. Compliance with a number of these requirements are justified in the safety assessment (SA) for the upgraded storage facilities. DD is responsible for the SA and has allocated substantial efforts into the SA and its supporting appendices. DD is therefore seeking external input from a qualified expert partner (QEP) that will review the SA, including appendices concerning calculations of radiation exposure, optimization and safety. The main purpose of the review is for the QEP to help DD ensure that the content of the documents is technically sound and lives up to professional standards. As an additional option, DD may also seek review of the waste acceptance criteria (WAC) for the upgraded storage facilities. An additional agreement between DD and the QEP regarding review of the WAC will be made, should both parties agree to move forward with this.
