Preparation of preliminary safety assessment report for upgraded interim storage facilities for Denmark’s radioactive waste inventory

Danish Decommissioning (DD) is responsible for receiving, handling, conditioning and storing radio-active waste from Danish users of radioactive materials and from decommissioned research reac-tors. DD is in the process of obtaining regulatory permission for the construction of new interim storage facilities at Risø, Denmark. The new facilities (hereinafter referred to as NOL) are needed to store radioactive waste in a safe and environmentally and technically sound manner until a solution for disposal of the radioactive waste is in place. The NOL facility must comply with a series of legal requirements and guidelines from Danish author-ities and international bodies before construction can commence. Several aspects of compliance are documented in the preliminary safety analysis report (PSAR) and the waste acceptance criteria (WAC). DD and its advisors have developed these documents to the best of their abilities, and the PSAR has been reviewed by the Danish authorities. DD now seeks the assistance from a Supplier with high qualifications within the regulatory field of nuclear facilities to review, restructure and/or rewrite the PSAR and WAC to international standards prior to re-submission of the documents to the Danish authorities, with the purpose to obtain approval to start the construction phase of the facility (not the operation phase).
